Borja Martinez

borja-martinez

Graduated at the University of the Basque Country, Borja Martínez Gómez (Durango, 1992) obtained his degree from the ETSA in San Sebastián in 2017, after completing an exchange programme at the ETSA in Madrid.

He moved to Paris, where he worked between 2018 and 2022 at the prestigious Japanese studio Kengo Kuma & Associates, gaining experience in high-profile international projects, before collaborating with Archi5, an architecture firm located in Montreuil, a suburb of the French capital.

In 2023, he and his partner Alicja Kubicka founded the Paris-based studio Interplay Architects, combining cultural sensibilities and contemporary approaches to design projects characterised by an analytical and experimental approach, in which geometry, local materials, natural light, sustainability and cultural context play a fundamental role.

Their most significant work to date is the Polish Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025, a temporary structure of almost 1,000 m² made of Japanese pine wood that takes on a spiral shape, allowing for a sequential and progressive route during the visit to the exhibition, seeking contact with the outside at all times. The construction uses a modular logic based exclusively on two types of modules, a strategy that guarantees flexibility to adapt to the geometry of the project, while maintaining rigorous construction standards to meet extremely tight deadlines.

They recently won first prize in the competition for a new building at the Wrocław University of Technology, a project covering almost 15,000 m², developed in collaboration with Vaillo+Irigaray from Navarre.
